About He taonga

Find out more about He taonga and fill in the form to sign up.

Tēnā koe, greetings,

Nau mai haere mai!

Welcome to the Stroke Foundation’s free blood pressure support tool, He taonga!

In the Māori language, ‘He taonga’ means ‘a treasure’. This can include any object, resource, idea or technique which is of value.

We believe that ‘He taonga’ captures the true meaning of how we at the Stroke Foundation see all New Zealanders, ‘he taonga koe, he taonga te whanau, he taonga te whakapapa’ (you are important, your family is important, and your genealogy is precious).

We invite you to use He taonga to help keep you and your whanau healthy and strong!

So, let’s get started - sign up by filling in the form below:

How does He taonga work?

He taonga is designed to provide you and your whanau with the tools, support, and motivation to change your lifestyle and manage your blood pressure. The six-week programme comes with weekly motivational emails, videos and support delivered direct to your inbox. You will learn more about blood pressure, why it is important to your overall health, and ways to manage high blood pressure. The tool will also step you through the process of setting goals for healthy living and keep you motivated on your journey to improved hauora.

As part of the programme you’ll follow the story of Tama and Aroha as they learn how to manage their blood pressure and overall health with the support of their whanau. It’s a great story. We also have inspirational video clips from Sonny and Maria, sharing their own real-life journeys to healthier living.

What do you need to do?

He taonga is an online programme, designed to work on your computer or mobile phone. An estimate of 30 minutes each week for six weeks is needed for reading and carrying out the activities in each email.

You might be surprised to know that you don't have to make huge changes to lower high blood pressure. What’s important is taking small steps to create positive habits, for example start walking two to three days a week for 10 – 30 minutes over a month. Every little bit helps.

Making changes can be hard sometimes and He taonga is here to help support you, alongside your whanau and friends. Remember, a journey begins with the first step. We look forward to supporting you along the way.

Whāia te iti Kahurangi,

ki te tuohu, me he maunga teitei.

Seek the treasure you value most dearly,

if you bow your head, let it be to a lofty mountain.

(He whakataukī, a proverbial saying)

Nā mātou iti noa, nā te whanau o te Stroke Foundation o Aotearoa

Yours sincerely, from the whanau of the Stroke Foundation of New Zealand.
